Looking back on '88 with Tiffany

'Fortunately Sue is still my best friend'

17 years old, rich, famous, beloved, and with yet another hit. That's Tiffany, the American singer with the red mop of hair and the sweet, melancholy eyes. 1988 was not only the Bros-year, that's obvious. There's every reason to start the new year with a chat about Tiffany's ups and downs.

Tiff:"I like being recognized".

How did you celebrate your 17th birthday?
Tiff:"My birthday was on a saturday, so on friday-evening my friends had organized aparty. We weren't in the mood for going out, so we played some games, Monopoly and things like that. No drunken situations, because I don't drink at all. I spent my birthday with my family. A little bit of a problem, because my parents are divorced. So in the morning my mother and her family and in the afternoon my father and his family. Complicated maybe, but it wasn't so bad at all."
Any presents?
Tiff: "Lots of them, but my favorite of them all were those big old jewel-cases. Now I need to find me some jewels (laughs)."
Don't you think you've lived a strange life last year, for a 17 year-old?
Tiff: "True, but I love that way of life. You could say I miss a lot of things because I'm not attending school and that I can't have a drink with my class-mates after school, but it doesn't bother me. This is the life I've always wanted to live. I do miss my friends when I'm away for a long time, but mostly I think: "I really love this job; I'm really happy. "And certainly when I hear from my friends that they have exams next morning (laughs)."
Do you like being rich and famous?
Tiff: "Yes, I like being famous. It's a dream come true. It's still a bit overwhelming, but fortunately it hasn't come so far that I start acting arrogant towards people who ask me for an autograph. I'm really doing the things I enjoy. When I want to go for a walk in the park, then that's what I'll do. When I want to go for a snack, then that's what I'll do. Being recognized is nice, I admit. About being rich: Well, popbusiness is a hasty world. It can all be over tomorrow. That would be a pity that I, after all those years of hard work, had to notice I didn't have a cent left. It's important that I save the money I earn now, in order to invest it later in a career or something else. I know a lot of people who are acting. Some of them have been wasting money from the moment they got their first cheque. When it was going not so well with their work, they were in trouble right away. So I have money, but I'm not better or worse because of that."
The people you know; are they still acting normal when they see you?
Tiff: "I can tell you that I'm very happy that Sue still is my best friend. She has been through this since the beginning and still sees me as the girl she's always known. She honestly says what she thinks and feels. Sue and I will be sharing an appartment soon. That will be in June, when her last schoolyear is over. But it's true that some people start acting weird. You know, they try to please me all the time. They don't have to; let them be theirselves."
